Possible spring groundbreaking for proposed Canal Place hotel According to the Chairman of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, closing on a lease should take place next week, and a groundbreaking in the spring for the proposed hotel. Trestle Development of Altoona, Pa., has proposed a 100-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott for the tourist attraction. The Trestle proposal has been on the table for several years and has become somewhat controversial as other developers say they could have already had a project moving forward for a hotel and restaurant, but have been told that Trestle’s is the only one being considered. Chairman Howard Buchanon tells WCBC News that Trestle was the only developer to step forward originally, and has worked for two years to finalize an acceptable deal. He says only now, when Canal Place has seen significant improvements, are other developers attempting to jump in….
